CAKE Debate Report

Published on 13 March 2024 at 12:46

This month, three members of the enrichment 'CAKE' - conversation at King Ed's, have not only triumphed in the local debate competition, but have also gone on to place 2nd in the regional counterpart, a fantastic achievement, heavily contested by other sixth forms and colleges.

The three students - Jude, Aidan and Brannan, all performed brilliantly with well-structured arguments and confident deliveries, and hope that this experience will only power them on to further success, both within their enrichment and college. Debating skills are crucial in everyday life as they enhance communication, critical thinking, and persuasion abilities. Whether negotiating a deal, resolving conflicts, or expressing opinions effectively, debating skills help articulate ideas, understand different perspectives, and make informed decisions. They foster confidence and enable constructive interactions in various personal and professional settings.

The team, who travelled to Leamington Spa to compete, based their debate on whether TV had become obsolete in the last five decades, with Aidan the chair, Brannan arguing against, and Jude arguing for, a difficult topic on a pressing issue that they handled fantastically well. The winning team debated on cancel culture, another pressing issue in our society, and the event as a whole served as a reminder of the power of the voices of King Edward students, and of their ambition and drive to succeed.
