Social Spaces: the sequel

From the canteen in Foley to the tent in the quad, our college for some time has had limited social spaces. Chambers is often out of use due to the various activities hosted by the college, meaning many students are faced with limited seating areas. So how is this situation being handled?

From the canteen in Foley to the tent in the quad, our college for some time has had limited social spaces. Chambers is often out of use due to the various activities hosted by the college, meaning many students are faced with limited seating areas. So how is this situation being handled?

As of September, our campus will be extremely different! The current student support will become a student social area, with features allowing students to relax, revise and have a general chat. The student social hub will be plainly student orientated, consisting of the student union office and the Campus Collective press office! The new social space will be food and drink friendly and in general an environment which allows students to unwind. Those who are making this transition possible aim to create a common room feel to the area with sofas and televisions. To make this possible, the relocation of the departments within student support will be to the neighbouring buildings on campus (provisionally the personal tutor building). Furthermore, Enrichment activities will be available within our social area. This rotation is an exciting change as not only will it meet many student demands, but it will also allow the strengthening of our college's community.

As a result of this transition, the college aims for Henry Hickman study space to revert to a library.  The introduction of the new social space aims to reduce the pressure on areas such as HH, the canteen, Chambers and corridors (especially in bad weather). Furthermore, we will also see an addition of more seating around campus (specifically more indoor seating) this will predominantly be within corridors in an attempt to relieve congestion and make students more comfortable!  As the summer term and year 13 exams begin, classrooms can be used for private study. However, please be aware of which classrooms are free (they will usually be published through an email). Finally, the lecture theatre is also allowed for private study, but staff members must be alerted to prevent double-booking or misuse of the room.

In conclusion, the college campus will be very different in September to tailor our campus to our needs. We cannot wait to see the changes and hope you can't either! The college is happy to receive suggestions for improvements; if there are any, please contact Stuart Eaves.
