The popularity of reading is on the rise, largely attributed to "BookTok" on the social media platform TikTok, where thousands of individuals share book-related videos on the daily. Many are willing to pick up a book themselves, yet they lack the guidance on where to begin.

As a person, who enjoys reading, I’ve read many amazing 5-star books that I’ve never stopped thinking about, and they are included in this list.

So, whether you are searching for the perfect book to kick-start your reading journey or are already an avid reader in pursuit for a wonderful book recommendation, here’s a curated collection of 12 books spanning different genres and authors that you could dive into in 2024.

  1. The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

But you won’t be successful. Because this plot twist is hallucinatory. Be prepared.

  1. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

This book follows a young woman, Addie LaRue who makes a dangerous bargain to become immortal and fade into obscurity of any person’s mind after meeting them consequently.

This fiction novel with historical and fantastical elements will capture your soul from the beginning to the end to beyond, retaining a connection to your heart even as you depart from it.

  1. Happy Place by Emily Henry

Despite being one of the best modern romance authors of the past couple of years, Henry outdoes herself with her latest release ‘Happy Place.’

This charming, summer-themed second-chance romance, laced with subtle touches of sensitivity and profound themes, revolves around a close-knit group of six friends and is a definite addition to your ‘To Be Read’ stack.

  1. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Set in the scandalous and shimmering times of 1950’s old Hollywood, this novel portrays the story of Evelyn Hugo, a woman that had been celebrated since her debut. And her seven husbands, of course.

This book delves into themes such as femininity and sexuality, truth and identity, as well as ambition vs morality. This exquisite story will sweep you up right into its magic.

  1. I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

If you enjoy immersing yourself into another person’s narrative, then this memoir penned by your cherished childhood Nickelodeon actress Jennette McCurdy could be the ideal fit for you.

Regrettably, this painful memoir unveils that the idyllic facade presented on screen in shows like iCarly or Sam and Cat didn’t reflect what was happening behind the cameras. The memoir depicts McCurdy's journey toward healing after events that profoundly and adversely impacted her life, illustrating how she found the strength to move forward and embrace a life of freedom.

It is recommended to listen to the audiobook of this memoir, as McCurdy narrates it herself, which evokes emotion within the reader and aids you in emphasising with her suffering as well as celebrating in the blissful moments.

(Please search up any content warnings before you plan on reading this book, as it is quite heavy and could be deemed as significantly triggering.)

A War College. Love. Betrayal. And Dragons.

Fourth Wing gained immense popularity in 2023 due to its originality, captivating the interest of millions of readers. Certain individuals adored it so much that they even got tattoos inspired by this book (which is quite a daft idea, as this is an incomplete series after all.)

  1. Yolk by Mary H.K. Choi

A humorous yet heartfelt narrative unfolds as we follow the journey of the Baek sisters, Jayne and June.

These complicated characters may have their differences and miscommunications, but when June is diagnosed with cancer, the sisters must unite together and fulfill their sisterly obligations to one another.

(Again, search up the content warnings as this book can get quite heavy.)
