Is separating the music from the artist a good idea?

Published on 5 July 2024 at 16:32

If I asked you to share your favourite musical artist and explain why you admire them, you'd likely have someone in mind right away, saying it’s for their immense talent and flawless discography. But what if I asked you whether you believe your favourite musical artist is a good person in real life? Would your response be different?

In contemporary times, numerous artists exhibit problematic behaviour in their personal lives or even convey controversial messages through their songs. This dilemma prompts consideration as to whether supporting such artists is appropriate or if it's acceptable to enjoy their music while dissociating it from the artist’s problematic beliefs or actions.

So why do certain artists resort to controversy despite possessing undeniable musical talent? Controversial music serves as a potent avenue for artists to express their perspectives and challenge authority, thereby boosting their popularity in the media. Moreover, specific genres often garner attention for their perceived problematic elements; for instance, rap and hip-hop have been criticized for their alleged association with street violence and shootings, while heavy metal is frequently targeted for its perceived anti-religious themes.

Numerous artists immediately spring to mind, with Kanye West being a prominent example. From his enduring feud with Taylor Swift to his antisemitic remarks in 2022, West often finds himself in positions that are difficult to justify. Nevertheless, boasting nearly 80 million listeners on Spotify, it's evident that he retains a considerable fanbase. While many continue to ardently defend him, one can only hope that most listeners recognise the flaws in his actions.

Certainly, Kanye West isn't the sole controversial artist in the industry. From Ariana Grande facing allegations of being a homewrecker to Lil Nas X and Doja Cat incorporating satanic messages and symbolism into their work, and Chris Brown's history of physical abuse towards Rihanna, numerous artists have engaged in undeniably troubling behaviour.

I conducted interviews with a couple of individuals to gather their personal opinions on this issue. One participant expressed, "Discovering that your favourite artist has engaged in such controversial behaviour can be truly heartbreaking, especially after supporting them for years. Considering these artists are already millionaires, I doubt that a few people stopping to listen to them would impact their wealth or career."

Another interviewee remarked, "I think that separating the music from the artist is the best way to go. You can appreciate their music without condoning their actions."

As we progress, it's crucial to reflect on the true character of these famous individuals. Given the unpredictability of waking up to headlines about our favourite artists embroiled in yet another controversy, adopting the mentality of separating the artist from their music is worth considering.
