The VMAs: Culture or Controversy

Published on 27 November 2024 at 10:16

With the start of the year, many artists have competed for the top spot, attempting to reach for the media’s attention. What happens when this desire for fame becomes sloppy and paltry? From Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Taste’ controversy to Taylor Swift’s ‘album blocking’, the recent months have changed the tide for the music industry in an irreparable manner.

The resurgence of a cutthroat and demanding pop scene has caused celebrities to pervert the true nature of music with an agenda of greed and lust; following on from her past qualms with Olivia Rodrigo, Carpenter has continued to rattle the very integrity of the music industry by using the likes of Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendez as muses for a revenge-filled yet sultry song.

However, the new year has also brought attention to smaller artists, such as Chappell Roan, that hold unwavering political views in the face of adversity. By uplifting those who are willing to take backlash for standing against the intellectual warfare that is contemporary media, we are able to grow as a society and begin to adapt, just as music has done for centuries!

Overall, the 2024 season of music has been an ode to the vibrancy of the 2000’s. With releases of albums, like Beabadoobee’s ‘This Is How Tomorrow Moves’ and Lana Del Rey’s upcoming ‘Lasso’, and anniversaries for past hits, such as The Cardigan’s ‘Lovefool’, all music fans have been catered towards; what will the future bring for the world of music?
