Student Union Elections

Published on 31 January 2024 at 16:55

Being part of the Student Union gives you a unique opportunity to represent your peers and bring about the changes you’d like to see at King Ed’s, standing in a student election and becoming a students’ union officer makes for an impressive addition on your UCAS application or CV.

There are many elected roles available, with some requiring greater involvement than others. Our current SU Chair Abdullahi Isse, explains what made him decide to run for election.

‘As I reflect on my term as student union chair, I am forced to remember why I decided to apply. It’s been an incredible opportunity fuelled by purpose. We’ve shattered barriers, fostered diversity, and made our voices heard loud and clear. It’s been all about sparking change. Being your voice, standing for inclusion, and challenging the status quo—it’s been my honour. Now, I’m passing the torch to the next generation. It’s your turn to shape the narrative, challenge norms, and build a place where everyone’s voice matters. Step up and speak out.’

Here are a few things you should consider before running for student election…

First and foremost, elected students can drive change. By leading campaigns or organising events, you can steer the direction of your society, sports club, or wider college.

Becoming an SU officer provides you with a unique opportunity to support a large organisation early in your career.

The experience you’ll gain will look great on your CV and you’ll be able to use relevant examples from your time in office to back up skills in your cover letter and at interview.

There are, however, some drawbacks, most notably the fact that increased involvement results in increased time pressures. For the more demanding roles you may need to sacrifice some of your time, which may impact upon your studies or social life.
